Have you ever wondered what happened to Malchus? I guess a
better question is who is Malchus? The night Jesus was arrested in the garden,
Malchus was the slave of the high priest that had his ear cut off by Simon
Peter. He is never mentioned
after the accounts of Jesus being arrested. So I
ask again, whatever happened to Malchus?
In the days before
Jesus was arrested Malchus had to believe that Jesus was just another preacher
that had lost his mind. He had his head filled with stories of Jesus being
called the King of the Jews and all the so called miracles that He preformed.
Even though Malchus was a slave, he was still in the presence of the high
priests when they talked about Jesus. He was privileged to all the information
the priests had on Jesus. Malchus probably hated Jesus just as much as the high
priests because Jesus made the high priest mad thus in turn making Malchus’
life even harder. So when the time came to arrest Jesus, Malchus was probably
eager to see Him be arrested. Malchus may have even volunteered to go with the
soldiers to arrest the King of the Jews. What happened to him on that night
changed his life forever.
John 18:10 says,
“Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s
servant, cutting off his right ear.” That act alone would change a man’s life
forever, but that was only the start of the radical change in Malchus’ life.
Luke, the doctor in the group, tells of Jesus healing Malchus’ ear. Luke 22:51
says, “But Jesus said, “No more of this!” So he touched the wounded man’s ear
and healed him.” Now Malchus has a real dilemma on his hands. He can either
choose to accept what the high priest has been saying about Jesus or he can
believe the miracle that just took place with him.
There is no more
written about Malchus and the way that his life turned out, but I have to
believe that he instantly became a believer in Jesus and accepted him as King
of Kings and Lord of Lords. There is no way that he could return to the high
priest and continue to live as if Jesus was just another teacher. He may have
even made the priest mad with all the healing talk that was going on around
him. The priest may have even executed Malchus for his new stance on Jesus.
There is no way to know what happened to Malchus after his miracle, but I have
to believe that one day he will be in Heaven telling everyone about his meeting
with Jesus.
No one will ever get
to have a testimony like Malchus, but everyone that has accepted Jesus Christ
into their hearts will have a testimony that is pleasing to God. You are not
guaranteed any time on this Earth nor are you safe from the forces of evil, but
you are given a way to escape death and live forever. Just as Simon Peter could
have cut Malchus head off instead of his ear, you could easily not wake in the
morning. So be prepared when death comes for you and ask God for forgiveness
and accept Him as your personal savior. If you don’t know how to start, then
ask someone for help. God wants a relationship with every one of us and only he
can perform miracles in our lives
